My Future as a Learner...

Technology is a vital component in our world, and more importantly in our education. There are so many resources made available to teachers today that there is no excuse for not incorporating technology into the classroom. With new innovations such as interactive white boards, and improved software programs combined with classics such as PowerPoint and Excel, there are many different approaches as to how teachers can incorporate technology into everyday lessons.

I would like to set some goals for myself for the future in regards to technology use in the classroom. I look forward to presenting my students with lessons that utilize today’s technology. This includes small steps such as creating graphic organizers or notes using features through Microsoft Word, or creating a review game similar to Jeopardy through PowerPoint. Students need visuals in order to see how content ties together, and review games can be just as challenging as other review methods, yet it caters to students’ desire to participate in an interactive classroom. On a more sophisticated level, I would like to give my students more opportunities to use technology. They need to become familiar with what will become such an important asset to them. Finding time in the computer lab, and designing a lesson to be completed in the computer lab has often been a challenge of mine. I want to give my students a variety of ways to learn. This includes utilizing webquests, podcasts, and educational websites. My students can use these independently in the computer lab, or we can learn together in the classroom by displaying these with the Elmo and projector. These resources will give my students a unique learning experience that will enhance their education as well as give them a chance to become familiar with the wonderful world of technology.

I am also in the process of creating a website for my classroom. I want to give my students a place to go for homework help, get notes on important assignments, find a calendar with important events. This will allow us to branch outside of the classroom walls. Parents will be able to learn more about me, and check in with classroom activities as well, in order to stay connected with their children. There are only a few teachers in my district with webpages and I hope I can share my experience with others who are interested. I have learned throughout my Masters courses that technology does not have to be intimidating. Programs today are much more user-friendly. If I can share my passion with even my grade-mates, hopefully, we can start to break the mold and encourage others to design a webpage as well.

In order to give my students these unique experiences with technology I will need to devote time to learning about these different resources and how they can become an asset to my classroom. It is said that teachers are life long learners, and I could not agree more. I look forward to spending the upcoming summer and school year to broadening my knowledge base in technology. Conquering the ideas I have shared above will be a starting point for me. However, I would like to also learn more about all of the advanced functions of interactive white boards. As of now I have only tackled the basics, yet I know with more training I will be able to give my students a more sophisticated and complete learning experience.

There are so many great programs and features that are available to teachers. I need to take the time to learn how I can incorporate these accessories into my classroom in order to better serve my students. I am excited to start exploring the world of technology, and most importantly to open my students’ eyes on how wonderful technology is.
